Pump condition monitoring avoids possible process failures

Grund­fos is launch­ing the Con­di­tion Mon­i­tor CMU for track­ing pump health and alert­ing to pos­si­ble process fail­ures in all appli­ca­tions using CR mul­ti­stage pumps. The offer­ing is designed for indus­tri­al appli­ca­tions such as water treat­ment, tem­per­a­ture con­trol and process indus­tries, but also build­ings and oth­er applications.
The small, intel­li­gent sen­sor tracks a pump’s activ­i­ty and detects pos­si­ble sys­tem faults, such as dam­aged bear­ings, dry-run events, cav­i­ta­tion, unbal­ance or water ham­mer. The Con­di­tion Mon­i­tor then alerts oper­a­tors to poten­tial process fail­ures via a sim­ple, user-friend­ly dis­play via cloud-based apps or stan­dard net­work con­trol systems.

One exam­ple is bear­ing sta­tus: an alert turns yel­low when a pump’s bear­ings begin to show mechan­i­cal dam­age. This allows oper­a­tors to plan main­te­nance when it is most con­ve­nient. If the alert turns red, the unit is telling you to change the bear­ings as soon as pos­si­ble to avoid downtime.
The Con­di­tion Mon­i­tor uses a sin­gle sen­sor mount­ed on the drain plug in the motor stool which makes it easy to retro­fit. The sen­sor mea­sures a range of key per­for­mance data via accelerom­e­ter, ther­mome­ter and ultra­sound. In addi­tion to a dis­play on the pump itself, the unit con­nects to a vari­ety of mon­i­tor­ing sys­tems. It con­nects wire­less­ly to the Grund­fos iSo­lu­tions Cloud, giv­ing users the oppor­tu­ni­ty to set up remote alarms and acti­vate a vari­ety of Grund­fos ser­vices. It also con­nects to SCADA/BMS/DCS sys­tems through stan­dard com­mu­ni­ca­tion protocols.
